Genomes, Math and Money

Barry Merriman
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

The ability to read and interpret the human genome is the most rapidly advancing area in all of science, technology and the healthcare industry. I will give a brief overview of the field and its current status, and then focus on the specific problem of finding the genes that cause human disease. There, I will indicate the role that math and scientific computing can play, and mention some specific problems I have worked on with Professor Osher. I will also tell a few strange stories from the front lines of the race to make a machine that can read a human genome for $1000, and the global battle to solve all human disease.
