Complex fluids, the fluids with microstructures, are ubiquitous in
biology. In this talk, I will concentrate on the study of ionic solutions through
transmembrane proteins (ion channels). By employing a general energetic variational
approach, the focus is on the coupling and competition between different mechanisms.
