Accelerating Cancer Research Using Advanced Computing Solutions

Eric Stahlberg
National Cancer Institute

Responding to Executive Initiatives in precision medicine and strategic computing, National Cancer Institute and the US Department of Energy have joined in a collaborative effort entitled Joint Design of Advanced Computing Solutions for Cancer to simultaneously advance the frontiers of computing and cancer research. This collaborative effort spanning multiple DOE national laboratories (ANL, LANL, LLNL, and ORNL), NCI Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis, NCI Division of Cancer Control and Population Studies, and Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, is exploring how pursuing predictive insight into complexities of cancer can take advantage of emerging machine learning capabilities to speed insight and understanding. Updates and early progress in the collaborative endeavor will be shared, as well as insight into broader efforts and future potential applications of machine learning and extreme scale computing in meeting the challenges posed in developing reliable predictive computational models for cancer.
