The Scope and Promise of Alternative Computing Paradigms

Vwani Roychowdhury

This talk will review different models for alternative computing, and their
promise and drawbacks. In particular, the power of and challenges facing the
conventional digital computing paradigm will be discussed. These discussions
will set the stage for a review of alternative computing paradigms (e.g.,
artificial neural networks, quantum cellular automata, analog computing
etc.) that have been proposed in the past, and why they have not lived up to
their initial promise. The talk will conclude with the speaker's view of
what truly alternative computing paradigms should be aiming for and how.
