Quantum Control with Ultracold Atoms

Work towards laboratory implementation of quantum information processors is pushing forward our capabilities in quantum control. Whereas work in the last century involved control and manipulation of single quantum systems, the next frontier is arbitrary quantum control of systems with many degrees of freedom. Building on its years of expertise in precision metrology, the atomic physics community is poised to take on this challenge. Ultracold neutral atoms, are well isolated from the decohering environment and can be strongly coupled to control fields, making them a natural system for this goal. In this talk I will present recent progress in our approaches to prepare, control, and measure these atoms with an eye towards application in quantum information processing.
