Over the past five years a $40 million initiative entitled “Diverse Intelligences”, generously provided by the Templeton World Charity Foundation, has funded scores of research grants in a variety of fields, and supported community building through an ongoing summer institute and annual summit. While the community has evident strengths in many aspects of comparative cognition and psychology, the philosophy of cognition, and various social and biological subfields, it could be strengthened with a more intentional focus on mathematical rigor and sophistication. During this session we will begin a discussion of strategies and approaches to help those outside the mathematical sciences acquire and usefully deploy mathematical methods and tools. And we will look toward the future with an eye toward funding opportunities specifically aimed at mathematical approaches.
