Diffusion-Limited Cell Growth in Scaffolds

Mass transfer from the fluid-scaffold interface can often be the rate-limiting step in the development of tissue engineering products. Whereas conventional cell culture is performed on a two-dimensional surface, tissue engineering requires cell growth in three-dimensional scaffolds. Considerations of such diffusion-limited growth in three-dimensional scaffolds and engineering approaches to address these problems will be discussed.
