An application of algebra to materials science, a case study:exact relations for composite materials

Exact relations are sets of relations between components of material tensors that hold for any composite, provided they hold for each of its constituents. I will describe a general theory of exact relations developed by myself, Graeme Milton and Daniel Sage that reduces a problem in materials science to a problem in algebra. I will also talk about a more general problem in composites that reduces to a problem in geometry.
