Tutorial: The Direct Scattering Problem for an Infinite Cylinder

This tutorial is designed to introduce students to the basic ideas of
electromagnetic scattering theory for time harmonic fields. For the sake
of simplicity we only consider the scattering of TM polarized waves by
an infinite cylinder. We consider both scattering by a perfect conductor
and scattering by a penetrable medium of finite conductivity. We consider
uniqueness and existence of solutions(including outlines of proofs were
appropriate),far field patterns and elementary spectral properties of
the far field operator. We conclude by making a few comments on the
direct scattering problem for partially coated perfect conductors.
