The BioEncyclopedia project is an ongoing research and development effort funded by DHS in support of the Biodefense Knowledge Center. The primary technical goal of the project is to integrate a large number of relevant data sources into a single repository with a consistent view of the data. In order to meet those objectives a large number of research problems must be addressed, including: large-scale ontology design and definition; development of ontology-driven tools; and information extraction from free text documents. During this presentation, I will describe the challenges we are facing, outline our current activities, and hopefully place this work in the context of the larger research community.
