In this lecture we consider two aspects of the classic vector space retrieval paradigm for retrieval. First, we discuss how to systematically approach retrieval quality measurement in a manner that allows us to study retrieval schemes that trade quality for efficiency, without human assessments. Second, we discuss extensions of the vector space paradigm to XML documents, posing some of the challenges that arise.
