TUTORIAL: Analysis of Biological Networks (Part 1)

We will describe recent advances in understanding complex biological networks. To analyze the local structure of networks, we defined network motifs, patterns that occur in a network far more often than in random network ensembles. Network motifs are found in networks from diverse fields ranging from biology to social networks, language and engineering. Each type of network has its own set of motifs. The motifs appear to characterize the evolutionary optimization or design constraints that govern each type of network. Each network motif in biological networks carries out a specific information-processing function. These functions have been studied theoretically and experimentally. We will discuss topological generalization of motifs, and algorithms for coarse-graining networks to unravel their higher level structure. Theoretical issues on the effect of different random network ensembles on the detection of motifs will be discussed. The network motif approach can be applied to diverse systems.
