Red Blood Cell as a Product: Part I Biodesign Methodology and Materials Selection

David Needham
Duke University

In the first part of this presentation we will consider how to map engineering onto Biology using traditional engineering materials matrices, design schemes and principles, --what we might call, BioDesign Methodology. We will define the function of the cell and see how this represents a problem nature solved, oxygen delivery. The first stage is to identify the cell’s components and then evaluate materials relationships of composition and structure for the red blood cell and in particular its membrane.
