The accuracy of network visualization

The visualization of scientific literature networks has a history going back several decades. An accurate visual depiction of these networks is critical if decisions are to be made based on network structure. As the sizes of networks studied has grown, there have been very few validation studies of the accuracy of the networks from the viewpoint of potential end users. In this presentation, we look at advances in science mapping, and recent validation studies aimed at creating the most accurate networks. We conclude with challenges for the future that may contribute to more accurate network visualization.
