On October 25, 2021, IPAM had the pleasure of featuring Nobel Prize winning physicist Andrea Ghez, UCLA professor of Physics & Astronomy, as a speaker in its Green Family Lecture series. One of the world’s leading experts in observational astrophysics and head of UCLA’s Galactic Center Group, Dr. Ghez shared her work on new developments in the study of supermassive black holes. Her lecture, “From the Possibility to the Certainty of a Supermassive Black Hole” had impressive in-person and virtual attendance. The lecture was live streamed and is now available for viewing on IPAM’s YouTube page. Dr. Ghez will also be participating in a lunch mentoring event for junior participants of the IPAM long program Mathematical and Computational Challenges in the Era of Gravitational Wave Astronomy. As only the fourth woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, Dr. Ghez’s great achievements continue to inspire other young women into the field.
