Abstract:

Professor Mandelbrot is world famous for his work on fractal geometry and chaos theory. He is universally acknowledged as the “father of fractals”, a subject that has its roots in the work of Weierstrass, Cantor, Klein, and Poincaré. Professor Mandelbrot has proposed fractal models in the study of coastlines, clouds, lungs, trees, arteries, etc. In a special issue of “Le Nouvel Observateur”, published a few years ago, he was listed as one the ten most influential scientists of our time.

For his fundamental discoveries, Professor Mandelbrot has been awarded numerous prizes and honors, including the 1993 Wolf Prize for Physics, the 2003 Japan Prize, and the 2005 Sierpinski Prize of the Polish Mathematical Society. He belongs to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society, among other academies.
