"When you do RIPS, you’re treated like a pro.  RIPS participants effectively own the IPAM building, with their own private offices, workstations, telephone lines, and the wonderful IPAM staff.  The projects are cutting edge and it takes a lot of hard work (and creativity) to get anywhere, but you really feel like you’ve done something of lasting value after the end of the program.   So if you want to do some cool math that could actually effect emerging technologies (and get a free trip to LA at the same time), get on the horn and apply to RIPS 2002."

"The RIPS program was a great experience. Working on a "real-life" problem was very interesting and gave me a feel for what I want to do in the future."

"I had a wonderful experience with the rips program and there are basically three points I want to make that I think would be helpful for prospective rippers.

1) We received a high level of respect, independence, and responsibility. I've worked on research projects before and the general attitude was, "Oh, he's just a undergraduate, let him do the number crunching/mechanical tasks." But with the rips program, you and the other students on your team are the main researchers for the project. You get to do the 'fun' work and the responsibility the project's success is on your shoulders. There are advisors to help you out, but the project is yours to complete. I was amazed at the level of independence; you are your own boss and no one is looking over your shoulder.

2)RIPS was very encouraging for further education. For various reasons, I had become disenchanted with the academic world and had started to seriously question my desire to pursue grad studies in mathematics. But there is not a doubt in my mind now. I definitely want to pursue a PhD in mathematics. There is such much to learn and so many cool things going on in mathematics. Plus, I loved coming into "work" every day. I was so excited about working on our project. My experience with the rips program showed me how wonderful it would be to work in academia or industry as a math phd who gets to work on different math projects for a living.

3)It was a great experience outside of the whole academic arena. This summer was one of the best summers of my life and part of it had to do with the fact that i got to play a leading role in solving a really cool mathematical problem. But part of it definitely had to do with the fact that LA, UCLA, and IPAM are all great places to live and work. LA, and more specifically Westwood, are beautiful areas with perfect weather. It was like 85 degress every day, with zero humidity and it rained once for a half an hour the whole summer. Plus, there is so much stuff to do in LA and it's got a great night life. The campus of UCLA is beautiful and it is exactly how I pictured the way a university campus should look before I ever even visited a college (you have to visit to know what I mean). and there is just a great learning atmosphere surrounding UCLA; I would love to come back and do graduate or post-doc work here. And then IPAM itself is a great facility staffed by extremely friendly people. As would be expected from such an institution, there is a great learning environment within IPAM, but moreover, it is a very friendly environment too."

"The RIPS program was a wonderful research experience. Not only did it allow me to explore the nature of math and technical research and learn about the many applications of math, but it gave me invaluable life skills like making effective presentations and writing research papers. Most of all, the RIPS program gave me the chance to work in a team environment. This made research fun, interactive and efficient because each person contributed something special and important to the project.
The RIPS program also gave me a lot of freedom to set the course of my research; my team and I could set our own goals and deadlines and determine what needed to be done to complete the project. At the same time, the RIPS program demanded that our research be rigorous. The topics we explored were advanced, and therefore required a lot of research work as well as guidance. Our faculty advisors and technical advisors offered us a lot of assistance and gave us helpful advice.
RIPS was also very fun. I will never forget the people I worked with and spent time with. Every day, the staff at IPAM made sure that we had time to meet and socialize. The daily RIPPERS tea times and our daily excursions to lunch made RIPS refreshing and enjoyable. In sum, the RIPS program was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding (as well as academically challenging) research experiences I’ve ever had. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to participate in RIPS. I highly recommend anyone interested in math or scientific research to apply to the RIPS program!"

"I am extremely glad to have been a part of the RIPS summer math program. It turned out to be a great learning experience and a very productive and exciting two months. RIPS exposed me to many fascinating mathematical topics that I would not have explored otherwise, and helped me to develop important research, technical writing, and presentation skills. Everyone in the program was a joy to work with. The IPAM staff was extremely helpful and made the research environment comfortable, warm and friendly. My advisors were very dedicated, and willing to help, often going out of their way to offer assistance. My teammates and fellow participants were incredibly brilliant and I enjoyed getting to know them and learning from them. Overall, my RIPS experience was extremely rewarding and far exceeded my expectations. I couldn't recommend a summer research program more highly than the RIPS program."

"RIPS was an excellent opportunity: working with a real company on a real problem. The sense of accomplishment you get when finishing such an open-ended problem makes everything worthwhile. The best part of the project was that, unlike school, you are not being consistently watched from behind and pushed to do your work, they trust you that you will get it done. So if you are motivated to work on such a project, you will find RIPS very rewarding. The entire staff of IPAM and the RIPS directors were very nice, fully ready to assist in whatever they could. I also had a great time with the other participants, a lot of whom I still keep in touch with. It was a wonderful program that I was a part of for it's inaugural year, and I’m sure it will only get better in years to come."
