"The RIPS Program was a great way to work and have fun. I had the opportunity to learn much about doing research as well as to explore new areas of mathematics. I also enjoyed meeting and talking to many interesting people at IPAM and Los Alamos. The other participants in the program were wonderful people and I had really good time with them. I learned to work in a team which I think will be very beneficial for me in the future. In a word I had a great experience this summer."

Raykova, Mariana (Bard College)

"RIPS is for you if you are looking for a nice place to spend the summer. Westwood village, Santa Monica and Venice beach, Staples Center and downtown LA offer endless routes for your weekend trips whether it's a scavenger hunt or just sitting back and enjoying the weather (not to mention there's a free trip to your company). RIPS is for you if you would like to see how far the math skills you possess can take you in producing something brand new and totally cool. Working as a team, you'll be surprised how much you can learn from you mentors and fellow team members other than the research topic itself. RIPS is for you if you would like to have some hands-on experience of how things are done in an industrial setting. The midterm and final presentation are more than just a speech. RIPS is for you if you are considering graduate school as your next goal. Your C/V shines with this kind of unique opportunities; besides, UCLA is definitely one of the top-ranking graduate institutions in the nation with a very high quality faculty group as well as a diversified student body. I simply cannot list all the reasons here for why anyone who is qualified should apply for the program. But it was the most rewarding summer program among all that I have participated in. IPAM staff did a wonderful job organizing and keeping the program flow smoothly. I only wish that this unique and ever-lasting moment could have lasted longer. And I sincerely invite anyone who is thinking about this to join in and hope that you'd have the same great experience as I had, if not better."

"I think rips is an intense and organized program. It was only nine weeks but I have learned my group project, writing many types of reports (proposal, progress report, and research report), working with others, and giving oral presentations. I have to say that every participant worked very hard. We have experienced frustration, stress, compromising, and achievement. I think it gave me the true feeling of what it is like to work in an industry project. Rips is really scientific and professional. It seems to me all the staff and advisors knew what was going on and what to expect. We were able to work on our project right away under our advisor's instruction. Meeting people from all over the world was fun, too."

"RIPS2003 has been an amazing way to spend my summer. The campus is absolutely amazing with so much to do such as tennis, basketball, swimming, Mercedes Benz cup, badminton, a full gym, and even movies being filmed! RIPS wasn't all fun and games though, we did serious work but enjoyed it all. The atmosphere at ipam is very relaxed. we could come to work as early (or late) as we wanted and leave as early (or late) as we wanted. it is truly an exciting atmosphere in which you can use the level set method and then talk to the person who invented it. Even while we were at work, we definitely had fun with antics such as office chair races."

"Thanks for RIPS, which took me flying across the Pacific ocean, and an interesting culture gulf. I am not sure if I am still in the air at the end of the program, because it opens up infinite possibility to learn. But I would find somewhere to land, someday. It is good to experience the ups and downs in research. I know I totally enjoy those difficult times. In fact, I miss those days when my entire mood was dependent on the project. RIPS provides a good atmosphere to explore - research, friendship, and pastime. Although people keep their individual tastes, but we try our best to group ourselves to many LA spots. Our footprints went from the Hollywood to almost every beach along the coast here. I would say this is totally LA experience. During this program, I met some very impressive figures which enriched my character. I would keep these impressions in my memory as I move on.
I think IPAM is very much weaved with the Californian culture - friendly, innovative, interdisciplinary. Viewed from the architecture perspective, the building is spatial, compared with many places in LA. As for an inner exploration, IPAM strives to make a connection with a wide spectrum of disciplines besides mathematics.
RIPS is a wonderful program for students who want to enrich their undergraduate career. Students are treated as major researchers, equally respected, and luxuriously accomodated. It is the most unforgettable experience throughout my undergraduate years. In fact, because of RIPS, it makes me a step closer to my career dream. It creates an environment where students taste the professional life at early stage. I am the living proof to say I have been successful in graduate school application, and I am sure RIPS plays an important role in this.
And the Californian beach, surfing in the real sea; Third Street, with lights sparking in music; coast line, listening to tides of the Pacific; Westwood, looking for fashion of the season...just to name a few."
