Hewlett-Packard

Company Information:

HP Labs' function is to deliver breakthrough technologies and to create business opportunities that go beyond HP's current strategies. For example, HP Labs is using a model-based approach to develop IT systems that are more automated, less prone to errors and more agile and predictable. Recently, HP researchers developed a wireless data chip; the tiny device makes it possible to attach digital information to any surface, object or document. Other research includes the development of tools of economics to help businesses better predict quarterly revenues, expected demand for a product and other future events. Security innovations include Virus Throttle (shipped with all HP ProCurve blade servers) and Active Counter Measures, which scans an enterprise's network for vulnerabilities and protect networks from malicious attacks

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Company Information:

Trailblazing has been the business of JPL since it was established by the California Institute of Technology in the 1930s. America's first satellite, Explorer 1, was created at JPL. In the decades that followed, JPL sent the first robotic craft to the Moon and out across the solar system, reconnoitering all of the planets except one. Pushing the outer edge of exploration, in fact, is the reason JPL exists as a NASA laboratory.
