Projects and Company Information

The Aerospace Corporation

Project Description

Company Information:

The Aerospace Corporation has provided independent technical and scientific research, development, and advisory services to national-security space programs since 1960. We operate a federally funded research and development center for the United States Air Force and the National Reconnaissance Office and support all national-security space programs. We also apply more than 40 years of experience with space systems to projects for civil agencies like NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, commercial companies, universities, and some international organizations in the national interest. Our highly skilled technical people have focused on ensuring the success of every mission and developing the most effective and economic space-related hardware and software in the world. Our insight and involvement in space programs has significantly reduced the risk of launch failure and increased both satellite endurance and performance. Our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities are staffed by some of the leading scientists in the world.

Arete Associates, Inc

Project Description

Company Information:

Arete Associates, founded in 1976, conducts leading-edge research and development in sensor hardware technology, data analysis, signal processing, and algorithm development; applied oceanography including experimental design and execution, instrumentation development, and data analysis; physics-based modeling, simulation, and high-resolution scene generation; and assessment of the impact of advanced technologies on military capabilities.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Project Description

Company Information:

Trailblazing has been the business of JPL since it was established by the California Institute of Technology in the 1930s. America's first satellite, Explorer 1, was created at JPL. In the decades that followed, JPL sent the first robotic craft to the Moon and out across the solar system, reconnoitering all of the planets except one. Pushing the outer edge of exploration, in fact, is the reason JPL exists as a NASA laboratory.

Microsoft Research Asia

Project Description

Company Information:

Microsoft Research Asia, Microsoft's fundamental research arm in the Asia Pacific region, conducts fundamental, curiosity-driven research with the goal of realizing Microsoft's vision of future computing. Technologies from Microsoft Research Asia have had an influence not only within Microsoft but also on the broader community. Over 200 innovations from the lab have been transferred to Microsoft products, including Office XP, Office System 2003, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Xbox, MSN, Windows Live and our company's latest releases ¨C Windows Vista and Office 2007. In addition, technologies from the lab have been adopted by international standards bodies such as MPEG4 (error-resilient video transmission), IETF (TCP/IP header compression), and ITU/ISO (video-compression technology). The MIT Technology Review named Microsoft Research Asia "The World's Hottest Computer Lab" in 2004.

Pixar Animation Studios

Project Description

Company Information:

Pixar Animation Studios is the industry leader in the creation of original stories in the medium of computer animation. It began with its first animated short film, Luxo Jr., shortly after being founded by Steve Jobs in 1986. For the next five-years, Pixar focused on developing the technologies necessary to produce the first completely computer animated feature film. Pixar’s relentless pursuit of creative technical solutions to the needs of the underlying story has made its films a unique mixture of cutting-edge visual special effects and good old fashion storytelling. Recent research advancements in fluid animation have once again raised the bar in computer graphics, providing motivation for Pixar to explore the animation of high viscosity/viscoelastic fluids.

Speilberg Family Center for Applied Proteomics at Cedars-Sinai Health System

Project Description

Company Information:

The Spielberg Family Center for Applied Proteomics (SFCAP) is a multidisciplinary team of researchers dedicated to furthering the development and use of proteomic technologies to guide doctors in patient management decisions. The principle goal of our center is the development, validation and application of proteomics technologies for the diagnosis and management of disease. Towards this vision, the SFCAP is actively applying existing proteomics techniques to clinical and biological samples to better understand the biology of cancer and other diseases, and developing new technologies that will allow us to extract more information more reproducibly from biological and clinical samples. Computationally, its focus is on the reliable and reproducible extraction and comparison of quality assurance and quantitative information from high-resolution mass spectrometric proteomics data. Finally, SFCAP is investigating computational linguistics methods for comparison of clinical annotations from multiple datasets.
