In this talk I will give an overview of continuum models for electrochemical interfaces based on non-equilibrium thermodynamics. I will discuss varios aspects, from space charge layers via specific adsorption on surfaces to charge transfer reactions and polycrystalline electrodes. Based on numerical simulations, I will compare the modelling results to various experimental datasets and give an interpretation of the later one. Finally, I will discuss possible approaches to bridge scales from atomistic to continuum models, especially how to validate such approaches, and try to classify current findings of atomistically resolved experimental datasets.
