The characterization of ground-based gravitational-wave detector data

One of the main challenges in detecting gravitational waves is distinguishing astrophysical signals from instrumental or environmental noise triggers produced by non-linear couplings between the detector subsystems and/or their environment. In this tutorial we will discuss some of the techniques commonly used to reduce the background of gravitational-wave searches, as well as a few novel approaches that are being developed to improve the quality of detector data.
