Modern Applied Mathematics for the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (MAMAOS)July 14 - August 2, 2003Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
IPAM gratefully acknowledges support for this program from a grant from
the Collaborations for Mathematical Geosciences initiative of the
National Sciences Foundation.
Introduction:MAMAOS is a three week summer-school designed to train graduate students in the application of modern applied mathematics to important problems in the atmospheric and oceanic sciences. The school will focus on three themes at the interface between the disciplines: numerics, asymptotics and stochastics, with one theme being covered per week of school. Each week's theme will be presented by teams of five distinguished lecturers drawn from leading institutions of atmospheric/oceanic sciences and applied mathematics.
In addition to introducing geophysically-minded students to new mathematical techniques selected for their applicability to important outstanding problems, mathematically-minded students will be introduced to new problems selected to inspire the development of new mathematics. Twenty students per week will be funded to participate in the school. Students may apply to participate in one, all or some contiguous subset of the three themes. In addition to lectures, students will be organized into interdisciplinary groups to work on research projects. The groups will be mentored by the lecturers and by post-doctoral fellows. The participation of the fellows will help enhance the learning and productivity of project groups in part by providing tutoring/mentoring sessions for students to aide in mastering new concepts. The summer school will be hosted by the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) on the campus of UCLA. IPAM is a National Science Foundation funded institute. For Students:Our primary objective is to bring together the top tier of graduate students in the realm of applied mathematics and geophysics. Special emphasis will be placed on drawing a diverse grouping of international and national students whose varied experiences can help shed new light on old problems. In addition to bringing students into close contact with one another through the creation of project teams, the school provides an opportunity for students to work with and meet leading scholars and post-doctoral fellows. The school will be located in the IPAM building located at UCLA. UCLA is located in Westwood Village, a scenic location within biking distance to the ocean. UCLA is also within driving distance to a multitude of attractions ranging from the solitude of the nearby mountains to the pulsing nightlife of West Hollywood. Some of these attractions will be sampled during weekend excursions. In addition to support for housing, supplemental support (for food or other incidental costs) may be provided based on need and available funds. Students will have office space in the IPAM building, and will have the opportunity to meet daily with team members, and faculty and post-doctoral advisers. We are no longer accepting applications for this summer's program. For Post-Doctoral Fellows:A special provision of MAMAOS is the incorporation of post-doctoral scholars within the school. Post-doctoral scholars will be expected to participate for the duration of the school, thereby lending it continuity. They will also serve as project leaders for project teams throughout the duration of the school. They will play an important role as liaisons between faculty lecturers and the participating graduate students. Thus they be provided office space at the school and will participate as students and teachers, thereby benefiting from both aspects of the educational process. Housing for the fellows will be provided as needed, In addition to support for housing, supplemental support (for food or other incidental costs) may be provided based on need and available funds. We are no longer accepting applications for this summer's program. Application to Program:We are no longer accepting applications for the MAMAOS program but will continue to receive supplemental materials (resumes and reference letters) for previously submitted applications.
