IPAM is saddened to share the news of the passing of Mariel Vazquez. We have lost a cherished friend, colleague, and valued member of our community. Mariel was an internationally recognized mathematician whose contributions to mathematics and mathematical biology were widely celebrated throughout the scientific community. She was a devoted mentor, teacher, and collaborator whose generosity, kindness, and encouragement positively influenced countless students, colleagues, and friends.
Throughout her longstanding engagement with IPAM, Mariel was deeply committed to fostering an inclusive mathematical sciences community by creating opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and scientific exchange. She was a main organizer of the 2018 Blackwell-Tapia Conference, a speaker at the 2015 Latinos in the Mathematical Sciences conference, and an organizer for the 2018 and 2022 Latinx in the Mathematical Sciences conferences. In 2019, she served as a project leader for the Collaborative Workshop for Women in Mathematical Biology, promoting innovation, collaboration, and the advancement of women in the field. Beginning in 2022, Mariel also served as a dedicated member of IPAM’s Board of Trustees, where she brought thoughtful leadership and counsel, along with a deep commitment to our mission. Her friendship, guidance, and enthusiasm for IPAM will be deeply missed.
During this difficult time, we extend our deepest condolences to Mariel’s family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Mariel’s legacy will continue to inspire and will remain an enduring part of our community.
