Andrew Majda (NYU) won the 2016 AMS Steele Prize for Seminal Contribution to Research for two pioneering and seminal papers on existence and stability of multidimensional shock fronts. According to the AMS, the prize is awarded for a paper, whether recent or not, that has proved to be of fundamental or lasting importance in its field, or a model of important research. The prize will be awarded on January 7, 2016, at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Seattle. Since 2001, Majda has participated in several IPAM programs, most notably as an organizer of the long program on climate modeling in 2010 and a workshop on hurricanes in 2007.  He will be a speaker in the 2016 workshop on Uncertainty Quantification.
