Abstract

Angular momentum transport and the general circulation of the atmosphere

Simona Bordoni

California Institute of Technology

In this lecture, we will review the fundamental features of the general circulation of the atmosphere, such as the zonal and time averaged latitudinal and vertical distribution of the zonal winds. We will discuss how this distribution is maintained by extratropical and tropical (i.e., Hadley) circulations, and how the two might interact. Finally, we will examine some expectations on how these features, and especially the tropical Hadley cell, will change with warming climate.
