Tutorial: Gromov-Witten invariants on Calabi-Yau spaces and their interpretation in physics

We review the connection between supersymmetric effective theories in four and five dimensions and closed as well as open Gromov-Witten invariants. In particular we will focus on integrality properties as suggested by Gopakumar and Vafa and on the relation of Gromov-Witten invariants to gauge theory invariants.
