Juneteenth, or 19th June 1865, marks the day when the last of the enslaved African Americans learned of their freedom – a good two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. The long overdue process to embrace this momentous occasion as a federally recognized holiday has finally passed the US Senate on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 and cleared the House with a clear majority the next day. It has now received Presidential approval to become the 12th federal holiday.
IPAM is thrilled to celebrate this news with the students, staff, and partners in the math community!
