Periodic minimizers of atomistic energies in two and three dimensions

Crystalline solids are the most important examples of solid
phases. Little is known how energy minimization principles can lead to the creation of periodic structures. Using tools from variational calculus we demonstrate that standard models for molecular dynamics admit crystalline ground states with fcc structure.
