Although the textual content is often the most readily accessible type of data in many cultural domains, novel knowledge can be mined by focusing on non-textual data, or by augmenting text with other metadata. This talk will examine three domains—music, food, and online memes—to explore the possibility of leveraging various metadata to understand emotional dimension and complexity of songs, as well as cultural transmission with respect to geography and social networks.
