How can visualization design influence the process of knowledge discovery in science?

In this talk, I will explain and showcase two interface design patterns I implemented in three recent and ongoing visualization projects. First, moving between levels of aggregation, and second movements between selections within the information space.

By showcasing these patterns and the insights gained throughout the projects we can ask more general questions about the collaboration between design and science. The difference between scientific research as a process of distilling insights and the design process as a process of drawing together can create fruitful new paths of knowledge discovery.
