Multiscale mathematical approaches for translational mental health benefits

In this talk I will review our recent work on developing mathematical approaches for understanding trauma/PTSD memory and bipolar disorder dynamics. Through developing a hierarchical framework from neuron dynamics through to cognitive and mood dynamics (mechacognitive framework) we can investigate the role of different components of memory on affective disorders. To investigate trauma memory and its management, we have developed a Markov chain approach to understand the patterns of memory consolidation and reconsolidation. To scale from neuron dynamics through to cognitive mood, we have developed analytical, numerical and statistical approaches to understand the dynamics of bipolar disorder. Throughout the talk, the translation benefits of these mathematical approaches will be emphasized.
