I review the characteristic evolution of coupled gravitational fi elds, namely the Einstein-Klein-Gordon and Einstein-Maxwell systems. The advantages of characteristic evolution to extract radiation fields at infinity are discussed, as well as other physical properties such as energy-momentum and angular momentum. The use of Bondii-Sachs coordinates versus affine-null coordinates to compute late time radiation features such as the gravitational and electromagnetic memory effects are compared.
