A comparison of two routes to membrane fusion

Monte Carlo simulation has revealed a pathway to membrane fusion rather different than the one usually assumed. Self consistent field theory calculations have been used to obtain the barriers to fusion along these two pathways. They show that the barriers in the new pathway are comparable or smaller than those in the old. Consequences of the new mechanism for experiment are noted.
