Learning relational theories

Charles Kemp
Massachusetts Institute of Technology

DISEASES cause SYMPTOMS, the SISTER of my FATHER is my AUNT, and FOOD is needed to sustain LIFE. Everyday knowledge about many domains is organized into relational theories, or coherent systems of relationships between concepts. I will discuss methods for learning these theories, and will show how these methods can learn kinship systems, causal theories, and simple ontologies. Some of these methods have been tested as psychological models, and I will present data from two attempts to explore theory discovery in the lab.
