The American Mathematical Society hosted a Congressional Briefing entitled “How Math Fuels the Knowledge Economy,” on December 11, 2013. The event was hosted by Congressman Jerry McNerny, who holds a mathematics PhD. The invited speaker was Mark L. Green, Co-founder and former Director of IPAM. Basing his presentation on the results of a recent National Academies/National Research Council study, “The Mathematical Sciences in 2025” he described how the role of the mathematical sciences has expanded dramatically in recent years and gave examples from a variety of dynamically growing industries including internet startups, biotech, film production, computer games, and individualized medicine. He also looked at the implications of these changes for training America’s future workforce.
