Whether one is seeking algorithms to locate disease genes, designing and predicting the properties of new materials, modeling the effect of economic changes on our climate, or discovering new methods to design trajectories for exploring the solar system, the need for cutting-edge, innovative mathematics is critical in many fields. Fostering new mathematical techniques and training a new generation of mathematical scientists who will develop and use them lies at the heart of IPAM’s mission.
IPAM was founded in 2000 as an NSF Mathematical Sciences Institute with a grant from the NSF Division of Mathematical Sciences.  IPAM seeks to bring the full range of mathematical techniques to bear on the great scientific challenges of our time. We sponsor programs that bring together researchers from different disciplines or from different areas of mathematics, with the goal of sparking interdisciplinary collaboration that continues long after the IPAM program ends. Over 2,000 visitors per year attend its workshops, long programs, student research programs, summer schools, and other programs.

Long programs bring together researchers from mathematics and other disciplines, or multiple areas of mathematics, with the goal of facilitating collaborative, cross-disciplinary research. Senior, mid-career and junior researchers from around the world convene at IPAM for three months. The long program
opens with a week of tutorials, which are followed by several (usually four) workshops on topics related to the overall theme of the program, and a culminating workshop at UCLA’s Lake Arrowhead Conference Center. Between the workshops, the participants organize a seminar series and other research activities. IPAM offers housing and travel support to participants of long programs. IPAM sponsors workshops on a broad range of scientific themes. Some workshops are part of an IPAM long program. Long program participants who are in residence at IPAM, attend all of the workshops in the program, while others visit IPAM for just one workshop. Other workshops, including our winter workshop series, are stand-alone. Most workshops are five days and feature 20 to 25 speakers. Exploratory workshops, which address an emerging problem or new application of math, are two or three days in length. Participants may apply for travel support to attend a workshop or may simply register online.  IPAM records most of the workshop lectures and posts the videos online; you will find them in the program archive. The Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS) Programs provide an opportunity for talented undergraduate students to work in teams on real-world research projects proposed by sponsors from industry or the public sector. Each student team of 4, with support from their academic mentor and industry mentor, will research the problem and present the results, both orally and in writing, at the end of the program. Subsequent to the RIPS program, some student teams choose to publish their results or present them at national conferences. IPAM provides each undergraduate student with a wide range of support and incentives including, stipend, travel allowance, housing and meals on campus, and site-visit to sponsors. IPAM typically accepts 36 students per year for this program. Improvements to our Facilities: Upkeep and enhancement of IPAM’s space is essential in ensuring a healthy and safe workplace. These enhancements cannot be supported by NSF funding. In addition, we need to upgrade our video equipment every 4 years. Your gift will help create and maintain a safe and welcoming place for our participants and the math community and will allow us to continue to provide the video content we currently create.
Child Care Fund:Â Help IPAM support participants whose active participation in the program is dependent on securing reliable, full- or part-time care for a young child or children. A generous donation from the Berland Foundation has made this program possible, but we seek additional support so that we may serve more participants attending IPAM workshops and long programs.
Celebrating Inclusiveness: IPAM encourages active involvement of all in our activities, and IPAM events promote community building, identification of talent, and celebration of mathematical merit. Your donation will help attract top STEM talent.
Directors Endowment:Â Donations to this fund will allow the director to fund activities and programs that cannot easily be funded by other sources. It will also support the research activities of the director and thus help with the recruitment of future directors.

SPONSOR A RIPS PROJECT
Industrial participation is a defining feature of Research in Industrial Projects for Students. RIPS offers industry-sponsored research projects to undergraduate students in math and related disciplines. IPAM recruits corporate sponsors to propose a project and provide feedback and support to the student team throughout the nine-week program. The sponsors benefit from the results of the research as well as from access to highly talented student participants–some of whom may work for the company afterwards.
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS
IPAM long programs, workshops and summer schools benefit from the participation of industrial researchers, and the corporation benefits from the training, networking, recruiting, and opportunities for collaboration that the IPAM program offers. Members of the research staff from a variety of industries, such as data processing, information technology, aerospace, biotechnology, and engineering, come to IPAM workshops and programs.
We invite industry sponsorship of IPAM programs. IPAM offers scientific workshops and summer schools on topics that may be relevant to your company’s current research. The level and benefits associated with these sponsorship opportunities are negotiable and can be designed to suit your organization’s specific needs.
We also invite researchers from corporations to suggest a topic for a scientific program. This can be a 2 or 3-day “exploratory” workshop, a five-day workshop, a 1 to 3-week summer school, or a three-month long program.
