What can applied mathematicians do for you?

In this talk, I will review some mathematical and numerical results obtained in the past decade about Kohn-Sham models for (possibly charged) quantum dots embedded in a semiconducting crystal. I will first deal with the case of a single quantum dot, then turn to the more difficult case of a random distribution of quantum dots. I will also discuss spectral pollution problems which can be observed for some at first sight reasonable discretization methods.
