More than 100 scientific societies, universities, research institutes, and organizations all over the world (including IPAM) are dedicating 2013 as the year of Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE). MPE2013 is an initiative to learn more about the challenges faced by our planet and the underlying mathematical problems, and to increase the research effort on these issues. As part of this initiative, IPAM will sponsor the program Materials for a Sustainable Energy Future which will include a series of workshops and a public lecture by Emily Carter, Founding Director of the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment at Princeton University. The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has provided a grant of $467,549 to support the extension of the Mathematics of Planet Earth program into the future.
