Bin Yu Receives 2018 Elizabeth L. Scott Award

binyuOn August 1, 2018, Professor Bin Yu was awarded the Elizabeth L. Scott Award at the Joint Statistical Meetings held in Vancouver, British Columbia.  The award is presented every other year in honor of Elizabeth L. Scott’s commitment to women’s career advancement in academia.  According to the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS) Yu was chosen for her “principled leadership in the international scientific community; for commitment and actions towards diversity, equity and inclusion; for consistently mentoring and encouraging women students and new researchers in statistics and data science; and for scientific contributions to statistical and machine learning methodology at the highest scholarly level.”  Yu is currently a Chancellor’s Professor in the Department of Statistics and Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UC Berkeley.  She was a member of IPAM’s Science Advisory Board from 2012 – 2015 and will be a speaker in IPAM’s upcoming workshop, Geometry of Big Data.
