Recent political campaigns have demonstrated the power of data analysis and social network analysis. An IPAM workshop on April 22 and 23 addressed the emerging area of mathematics of politics, with talks by Lynn Vavreck (UCLA, Political Science), Solomon Messing (Facebook), and other researchers. Additionally, Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-CA 9th District) gave a public lecture entitled “How Election Campaigns are Run and the Future of Math in Politics,” which featured topics such as optimization of campaigns and prediction of elections and trends.
