Shayan Oveis Gharan Wins 2023 Stephen Smale Prize

We are thrilled to report that Shayan Oveis Gharan, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, has been awarded the 2023 Stephen Smale Prize. The Stephen Smale Prize recognizes major achievements in furthering the understanding of the connections between mathematics and computation. Gharan has succeeded in applying algebraic and spectral methods to the design of algorithms and combinatorial optimization.

Dr. Gharan participated as a speaker in IPAM’s 2018 workshop Expected Characteristic Polynomial Techniques and Applications, part of the long program Quantitative Linear Algebra.
