Student Research Programs

Sponsors and project titles in 2025 include the following :

• Project 1: Mitsubishi-A: Estimating Sensor Viewpoints using a Three-dimensional Map

Mitsubishi Electric, founded in 1921, is an electrical and electronic equipment manufacturer, developing products and solutions in widely diverse fields, including home appliances, industrial equipment, and space technologies. The Advanced Technology R&D Center was established to support the business of Mitsubishi Electric Group through the development of a broad scope of projects covering both basic and new advanced technologies. The main research themes include power electronics, mechatronics, satellite communications, next generation key devices, system solutions for electric power, transportation, factory automation, and automobiles. The 2025 G-RIPS project will involve matching partial point cloud detected by sensors with whole point cloud.

Techniques and Desired Knowledge: Machine learning, Global feature extraction from point cloud, Clifford algebra, differential geometry, low dimensional geometry, Topological Data Analysis, discrete geometry.

• Project 2: Mitsubishi-B: Key Relay Protocol for Quantum Key Distribution

Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Information Technology R&D Center is actively creating new businesses through basic research and development in the fields of information technology, media intelligence, electro-optics microwaves, and communication technologies. The 2025 G-RIPS project will be about the key relay protocol used for quantum key distribution.

Techniques and Desired Knowledge: Information theory (preferable), graph theory (preferable), quantum information theory (preferable).

• Project 3: Fujitsu: Discoverability with Modern AI

The Fujitsu Group provides digital services globally, with operations in different regions around the world, including Japan. Fujitsu has developed causal discovery AI that combines explainable AI and causal inference technology. A more detailed project description can be found here.

The 2025 G-RIPS project will focus on enhancing discoverability in advanced causal AI.

Techniques and Desired Knowledge: AI, Statistics, Graph theory, Logic.

• Project 4: IHI: Recognition of Partially Obscured Character Strings Printed in Various Formats and Typeface

IHI Corporation (formerly Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.) began with ship- building, but has evolved to develop and improve social infrastructure and industrial machinery.  A more detailed project description can be found here.

The 2025 G-RIPS project will further improve the material handling system in logistics centers by the image analysis.
