Since its official opening in 1991, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has established itself as a world-class university and one of the very top universities in Asia. Its top-class facilities and groundbreaking work in science, engineering, business, humanities and social science is successfully pushing back the boundaries of the information age, energizing the community’s transformation into a knowledge-based society. Tony Chan, former director of IPAM and current member of IPAM’s Board of Trustees, is now the president of HKUST.
The Mathematics Department of HKUST was also established in 1991. From its founding, the department has attracted many talented mathematicians from throughout the world, and has fostered the development of an intensive mathematical research culture in Hong Kong. It offers Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees in mathematics. After graduation, many HKUST math students go abroad for math (pure or applied) and related graduate programs or postdoctoral programs at the top academic centers in the US and around the world.
