Mathematical models in public transportation ... and their extension to equity objectives

Public transport optimization consists of many planning stages such as network design, line planning, timetabling, vehicle- and crew scheduling, or delay management. Typical goals are to minimize the costs and to maximize the convenience of the passengers which is usually measured in perceived traveling time between their origins and destinations. For the latter, the routes passengers choose play an important role, in particular for planning lines and timetables and for delay management.

In the main part of the talk, models and algorithms for public transportation planning are sketched. The models and their resulting integer programs will be developed for stop location, line planning, timetabling, vehicle scheduling, delay management, and for tariff planning. Each of these subsections will be concluded with some thoughts on how equity considerations can be added to the models. In the second, shorter part, the equity goals will be summarized and discussed.
