Welcome

Eitan Tadmor
UCLA / University of Maryland
Mathematics

Good morning. My name is Eitan Tadmor and I am pleased to welcome you to IPAM program
on "Geometrically Based Motions", GBM for short.

This is the
second quarter-long program that IPAM will run every year, complementing IPAM
short interdisciplinary programs, which together form the core vision of the
Institute.

IPAM stands
for the "Institute for Pure & Applied Mathematics".

It is the
recent (and indeed- the only) addition to the existing MSRI and IMA NSF Math
institutes, that was born in response to a call for proposals made three years
ago. The goal is to create an environment that will encourage the interaction
between mathematicians and researchers from other scientific disciplines. We
hope you will agree with us about at least one aspect of this encouraging
environment, after spending the next few days at the newly renovated IPAM
building designed by the world renowned architect Frank Gehry.

These first two weeks of the GBM
program will start with tutorial lectures by Professors L. C. Evans, O. Faugeras,
R. Caflisch, Y. Giga, and by J.-M. Morel, P. Souganidis and S. Osher.

We are in
an Oscar ceremony week and this is LA, so it is a proper occasion to thank those
who help the production. I would like to thank these speakers, and in particular
the last three who are the Organizers of the GBM program.

The program
was initiated by an original script of Osher & Souganidis. As a Co-Director I
would like to thank Souganidis and Osher, for the work in organizing this
meeting, and to thank J.-M Morel for responding to my request with prepared
tutorial lecture notes.  There is an array of activities planned during this
three month period. Here is a brief overview.

We will
have five workshops. April 16-17 are two days devoted to muti-resolution digital
geometry, rendering & control organizer with Stan Osher.

This will
be followed by a three days workshop, April 18-20, on GB high freuency waves
organized with Benamou & Engquist. April 23-27 is one week Workshop on Material
interfaces and GBM organized with Caflisch, Weinan E and Osher. There are
holidays weeks. We resume in May 9-11 we wil have a thre days workshop on moving
interfaces - a workshop organized by Griffeath & Souganidis.

The
following week, May 14-18, G. Sapiro will give a three meeting course on GBM in
image processing, computer vision and computer graphics.

Indeed,
starting next week, Luminita Vese will run her weekly sminar on Image Processing
every Wednesday 4pm. Sapiro's lectures will serve as an introduction for the
following week, May 21-25 workshop on Imaging in Medicine and Neuro-sciences  -
a week organized by P. Thomposon, S. Cherry and A. Toga from UCLA School of
Medicine together with Sapiro.

I would
like to thank all these organizers for the time and effort they put into the
program.

Finally we
will conclude with one week at lake Arrowhead. Please apply. Available seats are
limited at this workshop.

I would
like to thank the speakers and let me use the opportunity to ask them to provide
their lecture notes to IPAM staff so these notes could be posted on the GBM
site.

Mentioning
the IPAM staff led by  Eilish Hathaway -- the IPAM staff is also acknowledged
for a superb work, and I would like to address any of you with special requests
to IPAM staff for assistance.  We hope you will find the time you spend here at
IPAM rewarding and constructive.

On the
social side, a dinner is planned today 5:00 at the IPAM building for the
registered participants. Next Tuesday we will have a shuttle available to- and
from the Getty Museum, and this is a good opportunity to take advantage of the
main thing LA has to offer these days over the rest of the country -- the great
weather.

On Thursday
we scheduled a Lunch with the members of the Math Department. The Department is
nearby and you are welcome to visit.

The Math
department is our closest ally on campus, but not the only one -- with its
interdisciplinary vision, IPAM found strong allies in the various academic units
of the UCLA Campus, in the College of Physical Sciences, as well as Life
Sciences and the Medical school.

This is a
good opportunity to encourage you to visit the beautiful UCLA campus during the
period you are staying here.

In
concluding my academy award like list of those who should be acknowledged for
their contribution, special thanks go to the National Science Foundation (NSF)
who voted for our IPAM proposal.
