Understanding the dynamics of hydrophobic assembly

Thomas Miller

We investigate the role of the hydrophobic effect in the dynamics of soft matter systems. In particular, we discuss the collapse of an idealized hydrophobic polymer in water and the mechanism by which transmembrane channels mediate protein translocation vs. membrane integration. Coarse-graining and rare-event sampling methods, including the string method in collective variables, are employed to bridge the large ranges in space and time that are associated with these processes.
