Airborne ground moving target indication (GMTI) radar detection of moving targets at very low minimum discernible velocity (MDV) can be achieved by utilizing a multi-channel SAR-GMTI system. Such radar may employ a large, often sparse, antenna array, a wideband waveform, and long coherent processing interval (CPI) to simultaneously achieve strong clutter cancellation, fine Doppler estimation, and small spatial resolution. In this paper, one approach will be presented to characterize the radar clutter cancellation performance of such a system in term of the spectral composition of the waveform and the spatial structure of the linear array. The analytic solution may be conveniently used to trade off a SAR-GMTI radar design with a large bandwidth and many spatial degrees of freedom without the need of executing numerical simulations with excessive computational load.
