Results from shallow-water turbulence simulations on a rotating sphere are presented. Emphasis is on the ageostrophic behavior under large-scale forcing, a situation not much studied in the past. Some applications in astrophysics, including hot atmospheres of spin-orbit synchronized planets, are discussed.
