Abstract: A grand challenge for the research community is to design interactive devices that can communicate, sense and compute without any batteries. I will present various harvesting and communication technologies that we introduced over the last 3-4 years that can transform the way devices communicate with each other.
Bio: Shyam Gollakota is an assistant professor in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington and co-founder of Jeeva Wireless. His research focuses on the technical innovations required to accelerate the creation of Internet-of-Things and mobile health. His work has also received multiple awards at the premier venues in computer networking and human computer interaction including paper awards at SIGCOMM 2008, 2011, 2013, 2016, Mobicom 2013, NSDI 2016 and CHI 2016, ACM doctoral dissertation award in 2012, and was named as a technology breakthrough by MIT Technology review in 2016. His work is covered by media including New York Times, BBC, Washington Post, and Technology Review. He was also named to MIT Technology Review’s TR35, Popular Science brilliant ten and twice to the Forbes 30 under 30 list. He holds MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT.
